Jay and the Americans brought the sound of the 1960s to the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie on July 7, proving that their music still carries the same magic nearly seven decades later.

The group continues to feature two members from its classic lineup: founding member Sandy Deanne and Marty Sanders, who joined the band in 1962. They were joined onstage by longtime lead singer Jay Reincke, Darren Dowler, and Lenie Colacino, carrying forward one of the last great vocal-group traditions of the 1950s and ’60s still touring today.

Throughout the evening, the band delivered several of its best-known hits, including “Come a Little Bit Closer” and “Cara Mia.” The set also featured timeless favorites from the era, such as “Stand by Me” and “Walking in the Rain,” allowing the group to celebrate not only its own musical legacy, but the sound of an entire generation.

The familiar melodies and carefully layered harmonies filled the theater with a sense of nostalgia that went beyond simply hearing old songs performed live. For many members of the audience, the music served as a direct connection to another time, bringing back memories tied to their youth, relationships, and formative years.

Now, nearly seven decades into their career, Jay and the Americans show no signs of stopping. Their greatest gift may be their ability to bring an aging audience back to its youth, even if only for a few hours.
